The boom on a chain trencher is often designed to be spring-loaded, serving a critical purpose in the operation of the trencher. This spring-loaded feature allows the boom to maintain tension on the chain as it digs into the ground, ensuring that the cutting chain works efficiently and effectively. This tension optimally engages the teeth of the chain with the soil, enhancing cutting performance and allowing for smoother operation.

Having a boom that is rigid and non-adjustable would limit the chain trencher's adaptability to different soil conditions and depths. A removable boom could complicate the transport process and reduce the machine's operational efficiency as it would require reassembly when in use. An extendable boom, while beneficial in some cases, is not a standard feature on chain trenchers, which often use fixed-length booms suited for particular digging depths.

Thus, the spring-loaded design of the boom is crucial for maintaining tension and ensuring that the trencher performs optimally in various soil conditions.
